Summer has officially started, and 102.7 KIIS FM, LA’s No. 1 hit radio station, kicked off the season in the best way possible — a day-long concert!
On Saturday (June 4), iHeartRadio hosted the iHeartRadio KIIS FM Wango Tango to celebrate all things summer by showcasing epic performances from today’s chart toppers and the stars of tomorrow. Taking place at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, CA, fans were in for a treat from the moment they walked onto the event grounds.
In the afternoon, the radio station kicked off the music-filled day with the KIIS FM Wango Tango Village. The daytime event featured performances by Bibi, Iann Dior and Jena Rose, who all set both high standards and energy levels for the big show later in the evening.
“It was crazy and fun,” Bibi told Celeb Secrets backstage after her performance, with Dior echoing, “It was amazing and filled with high energy.”
“This is a dream come true for me,” Rose added. “It was an indescribable feeling. I have the most amount of fun while I’m onstage.”
Following the village performances, fans made their way to their seats to get ready for an ultimate night of music provided by Shawn Mendes, The Chainsmokers, Camila Cabello, Becky G, Charlie Puth, Lauv, 5 Seconds of Summer, Tate McRae, Latto, Lauren Spencer-Smith, GAYLE and Em Beihold, along with special guest Diplo at Dusk.
Notable moments throughout the night came from 5 Seconds of Summer, who gave fans a taste of their new album 5SOS5 with “Me Myself & I;” Camila Cabello, who made everyone want to say “Don’t Go Yet” after her sultry performance of songs off her latest release Familia; Shawn Mendes who treated fans to a variety of some of his biggest hits; Latto, who made a grand entrance with an orange and white outfit and glamorous “Big Latto” chain to perform “Big Energy;” and Charlie Puth, who showcased his true talent and how good his songs really are by performing hits like “Light Switch,” “How Long,” “We Don’t Talk Anymore,” “One Call Away,” “Attention” and “See You Again.”
Breakout artist Tate McRae has been making waves ever since her viral hit “you broke me first” dominated the both the Internet and the music charts. The Canadian singer/songwriter, who just dropped her debut album I Used To Think I Could Fly, mesmerized the crowd with her dance and vocal skills. She opened her set with a hypnotic performance of “You,” and then slowed things down for her second song, “friends don’t look at friends that way,” before performing “she’s all I wanna be” and “you broke me first.”
“I write for myself and I write about real experiences as if it was never gonna go onto the world,” she tells Celeb Secrets backstage. “So then when I do put it out, it’s like, ‘cool’ when people can relate to it and feel it for themselves.”
The night was a big one for budding emo songstress GAYLE, as it marked her first-ever “big stage” performance. Showing off her incredible guitar skills by performing “Sleeping With My Friends,” the 18-year-old turned the venue into a huge sing along when she performed her smash hit “abcdefu.” then took over the stage with her first-ever performance.
When catching up with Celeb Secrets backstage, she opened up about the viral hit: “Somebody asked me if I like said all of the things that I said in [ABC] to my ex and I didn’t it. I think that’s also why ABC happened cause I didn’t say anything at all. He just did things specifically like hurt my feelings.”
Diplo at Dusk turned Wango Tango into a massive dance party as he graced the crowd with his hit songs across multiple genres. He began his set with a remix of “Edamame” by bbno$ featuring Rich Brian, followed by David Guetta’s remix of Farruko’s “Pepas” and his collaboration with Sonny Fodera “Turn Back Time.” The crowd loved every minute of it as they raved with their oversized glow sticks. After delivering other notable tracks like “Don’t Forget My Love,” Diplo performed his newest song “Tupelo Shuffle” for the first time live.
Despite being the last performers on the bill The Chainsmokers brought the energy to Dignity Health Sports Park and had the crowd roaring for more from the minute they opened their set with their new single “High.” Alex Pall and Drew Taggart made sure to bring all of their fan favorites to Wango Tango, as they played songs like “Closer,” “Roses,” “Riptide,” “Don’t Let Me Down,” and more. Additionally, the guys spun live versions of songs like “I Love U” off their newest album So Far So Good (+ The Fall).
